About Improving Your Memory

You know that in order to gain muscular strength you need to exercise, well the same goes for actually increasing your ability to remember things. Your brain needs exercise, just like your muscles do. So your diet needs to be good, and you need to look at healthier habits.

Unfortunately, because our brains are so complex, they need a lot of effort in order to get them in the best shape possible. There are a number of things that you can look at doing which will help you improve the capacity of the retrieval mechanism in your brain.

To put it in simple terms, our memory is the activity carried out in our brain to recall information that we have gained through experiences in our lives. However, it is a complex process which involves various parts of the brain, and serves us all in very different ways. It can either be short term or long term.

What I've set out to do with this book is to provide you with not only great tips and techniques to help you improve your memory and cognitive skills naturally, but the information you'll need to better understand how your memory works so that you can better apply those techniques with the advantage of understanding why they work.

Improving Memory With Proper Nutrition

Every day we rack our brains trying to remember the little things that we need to do at the last minute, especially when we are about to leave for somewhere or are about to go to sleep. We use such ancient methods as making lists that will help us in remembering what we have to buy from the store, or where we have to be within the next twenty-four hours. We note down important dates as well as appointments on calendars and we might even choose to keep journals of things that we have done in the past so that we can remember the important events that occurred in our life.

It is very important for us to remember. We need to remember important days, loved ones, events and friends. As we grow older, our memory weakens and it becomes harder for us to remember events. This means that we need to write down more things than ever before. If we want our minds to remain healthy, then it is very important for us to have proper nutrition, as it helps not only in making our bodies strong, but also in making our memory and minds strong as well. Don't forget, many researchers say that the brain is like a muscle, and if we don't use it, we lose it.

There have been many studies on how antioxidants effect our memory. These studies show that free radicals might associate with the poor functioning of our brains as well as being associated with various diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Some studies show that spinach is very good for protecting our memory and learning ability in the long run. Some other foods that help with this include oranges, plums, blueberries, strawberries and vitamin E. Other studies show that when we eat double the amounts of fruits and vegetables (5 to 10 servings every day) there was an increase in the value of antioxidants in the plasma of our blood. This has the potential for helping mental capacity in adults.

Various vitamins such as B, B6, B12 and folic acid protect your neurons as they break down the homocysteine (amino acid) which is toxic to our nerve cells. They also help produce red blood cells that carry oxygen all around our bodies. Some foods which contain these above vitamins, are soybeans, citrus fruits, legumes, black beans, melons, asparagus, broccoli and dark leafy greens.

Antioxidants like Vitamin C & E and beta-carotene fight with many of the free radicals that can damage our cells. These antioxidants also help with improving our flow of blood between the brain and the body.

It is very important for us to eat right if we want to keep our body and mind healthy. Proper nutrition can help to slow down the progression of many degenerative diseases that not only effect our bodies, but our minds as well.
